A recent rejection notice from Yunnan University, which plainly states "low total score" as the reason for denying an applicant, has sparked discussion on Chinese social media.

一网友称其填报云南大学未被录取，系统显示校方的备注为“总分低，录取额满”。该网友配图称：“不要我就不要我，何苦要加这几个字羞辱‘本宫’。”

The controversy began when a netizen shared a screenshot of their unsuccessful application to Yunnan University. The College Entrance Examination Admission System, which was pictured in the screenshot, displayed the school's remark: "Low total score, admission quota full." The applicant humorously captioned the post, "If you don't want me, just say so — no need to add these words to humiliate me."

网友解释，自己发布截图并非不满，而是在玩梗。云南大学的这个退档备注十分直接，不像其他学校那样表述得委婉含蓄。

The netizen later clarified that their post was meant as a lighthearted joke rather than a complaint. Unlike many other universities, Yunnan University's direct approach stood out.

云南大学招生办工作人员接受采访时称，“总分低”备注是今年刚开始的，能让填报考生直观了解未被录取的原因。

工作人员表示，学校在录取过程中，都是依据报考人数遵循达到分数择优录取的原则，直至录满名额为止。

记者问及是否有考生反馈是否不太合适的问题，这位工作人员表示暂未接到相关反映，但会向上级领导反映情况。

A representative from the university explained that the "low total score" remark was introduced this year to provide applicants with clear, straightforward feedback about their rejection. The official emphasized that the university strictly follows a merit-based admission process, selecting candidates with the highest scores until all spots are filled.

针对此事， 新京报发表评论称，对未录取学生备注总分低，不必时刻要求大学高情商。

“本质上，这样的备注起到的不仅仅是信息告知作用，其实也可看作是一种‘政策语言’。这样的备注信息虽然被网友玩梗，但涉事学校的做法其实无可厚非，反而由于信息告知足够简单易懂，在一定程度上促进了高校和考生之间的信息沟通和交流，提升了沟通效率。”
